“You took the single out of my life, and now I can’t wait to see you tonight.” Swoon-worthy lyrics from Parmalee’s hit ‘Girl in Mine’, striking the right chord for Parmalee in Paradise, happening October 26-29 at Beaches Turks & Caicos. With irresistible melodies and undeniable radio hits—including four #1 singles like “Carolina,” “Just The Way” with Blanco Brown, “Take My Name” (Billboard’s Most Played Country Song of 2022), and most recently, “Girl In Mine” (Billboard’s 8th Most Played Country Song of 2023)—Parmalee has solidified their place as one of contemporary country’s top hitmakers.
With the all-inclusive resort concert Parmalee in Paradise just around the corner, we’ve put together a few things you might not know about the band (hardcore fans, you’re excused!). While their infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics have earned them a place in our hearts, there’s so much more to discover. And what better time to dive into it all, than ahead of the most exciting all-inclusive concert vacation yet!
Insider Tip: At Beaches Turks & Caicos, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—lively, activity-packed days with plenty of room to relax. And with Parmalee in Paradise on the horizon, there's never been a better time to go all-inclusive!
Their band is named after a small town - The band Parmalee got its name from a small town in North Carolina called Parmele, where they began their journey. With a population of around 300 people, the band frequently rehearsed there, in a barn. They thought the least they could do to make up for the noise was to name the band after the town!
Music runs in their veins – They’re all basically family. The group consists of brothers Matt Thomas (guitar/lead vocals) and Scott Thomas (drums), along with their cousin Barry Knox (bass) and life-long friend Josh McSwain (guitar). Barry always dreamed of being a drummer in a rock band, but as it turned out, he’s now a bass player in a country band! Both Josh’s father (Bud McSwain)and the Thomas brothers’ father (Jerry Thomas) were in a band, making it a natural progression for them.
They once performed for 15 people – Once upon a time in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Parmalee performed a set for 15 people. They made a total of $15. That goes to show that sometimes, the size of your audience doesn’t equate to the magnitude of your talent. Today, Parmalee has accumulated more than 1 billion on-demand streams with four #1 hits including “Carolina,” the Blanco Brown collaboration “Just The Way,” “Take My Name,” and most recently with “Girl In Mine,” Billboard’s 8th Most Played Country Song of 2023.
Matt & Scott’s mother once mortgaged her house to pay their studio fees – Actions speak louder than words and a famous band mom once proved just that in the best way she knew how. Along their windy road to stardom, Parmalee band members once racked up a $11,000 studio bill. They paid with a check from an investor, which bounced. Matt went to his mom and she swooped in to help. She worked at the local utility company at the time, and they all lived in a little three-bedroom house. Without knowing there were any hit songs in the mix, and without even needing to hear any of the music they’d created, she put up their family home as collateral. With that, she was able to get them the money they needed to pay for their songs. They made sure to pay her back before any other band expenses were paid!
Parmalee’s music video “I’m Gonna Love You” is based on a true story – Some people may already know this, but Parmalee’s music video for the hit song “I’m Gonna Love You” is based on a true story. This might not be hugely surprising as many artists use real life experiences as inspiration. In this case, Parmalee retells a 2010 robbery attempt that resulted in one of the band members, Scott, being shot. This happened just as they were about to go to Nashville to get a record deal. The whole ordeal amounted to months of recovery time for Scott. Despite it all, he forgave the robbers in court as he felt it was essential for his healing journey.
They’re super resilient – And that brings us to our next point. Parmalee's band members have demonstrated their resilience not only through their music, but through their love for friends and family. Everyone stuck behind Scott as he spent 10 days in a coma, 40 days in hospital, and lived to tell the story. They speak about this as often as they get the opportunity to tell the story. There's also no short supply of praise for family, friends and fans who raised money to help them get through it all. Once Scott recovered, they all went to Nashville together, did a showcase and secured their much-anticipated record deal.
Today they’re closer than ever before – As a band, the members of Parmalee have evolved through their circumstances. They’re strong, focused and now unafraid to speak out. After spending a decade together with “no measurable success”, they had more than enough time to build up loyalty. It was only after they’d gone through the highs and lows that their dreams became a reality in Nashville. Talk about perfect timing!
They’re super talented, but also regular people – Parmelee is a household name but the members are real people with real lives. Matt once said in an interview that if he could sing with anyone, it would be Bruno Mars (because who wouldn’t want to?). Scott shared that he loves cookies and cream ice cream. Josh loves downtime with friends and bandmates, and Barry is a big family guy. They’re all very different and have grown throughout the years. One thing's for certain: their music comes together in an impactful way.
They love touring, but also love being with family – Parmalee band members have frequently shared in interviews that the best part of touring is getting to play music for a living. This is one of the things that truly makes them happy. According to Josh, “We love the live connection”. While members agree that it’s fun to travel, see different places and meet different people, they’ll likely still tell you that it’s hard to be away from family. But, they do what they do for the love of it!
